Chapter 7 : Evoked potential audiometry

چکیده

When conventional behavioural audiometry is difficult or impossible, or when its results are inaccurate or suspect, there is a need for more objective hearing tests. Candidates for such tests include young infants, uncooperative, hyperactive, or neurologically impaired children, and those suspected of non-organic hearing loss. The usual goal is to approximate pure tone thresholds, using some measure other than conditioned or voluntary behaviour. The accuracy and extent of the required audiometry range from simple screening to a complete 'diagnostic' audiogram.

MATERIALS and METHODS: Cortical auditory evoked potentials were obtained from nine female and seven male patients with auditory neuropathy, ranging in age from 19 to 48 years. The control group comprised 15 (9 males and 6 females) age-matched, normally hearing adults. Cortical auditory evoked potentials were recorded in both groups. Audiological assessments were performed in both groups, which ...

Brain stem evoked response audiometry A Review

Brain stem evoked response audiometry (BERA) is a useful objective assessement of hearing. Major advantage of this procedure is its ability to test even infants in whom conventional audiometry may not be useful. This investigation can be used as a screening test for deafness in high risk infants. Early diagnosis and rehabilitation will reduce disability in these children. This article attempts ...
